I'm auditioning for the school play tonight at the University of Georgia.

At age 62, this is the first time that I've had a live theater audition since I was 17 years old. I was a senior in high school, so I'm definitely stepping out of my comfort zone here.

I'm back at the University of Georgia majoring in what I wanted to study when I was 17 years old, but I got talked out of it back then, and I ended up majoring in something else. Now, I'm finally pursuing that dream and majoring in theatre and tonight I'm auditioning for a part in the spring production of The Importance of Being Earnest.

I'm trying out for the part of Miss Prism. If you've ever seen the play or the movie, she is the very prim and proper governess in the movie. She has a very pivotal role in the plot, in the climax of the story, and so I'm trying out tonight.

I wasn't sure what we were supposed to wear for the audition, and I asked a couple of the girls in my class yesterday because it just said "audition attire". And I wasn't sure if that meant leggings and a T-shirt or athletic wear or what, and they said, "No, no, professional attire." And I had a dress on at the time, and they said, "Like what you have on today, professional attire." And I said, "Okay." So I decided on a black cardigan with a cream turtleneck and a black pleated skirt that I borrowed from my daughter, (thank you, Macy!), with some black flats, and then I put my hair up. So I thought this looks like professional attire. It's maybe not in style right now, but it looks like professional attire, and still looks a little bit like Miss Prism - I think? It's obviously not Victorian era, but it's got sort of that uptight, buttoned-up governess look about it. So here we go.

Ringing the bell after completing surgery and treatment for breast cancer.
Ringing the bell after completing cancer treatment!

It's a big day...I'm also getting my mammogram today. About two and a half years ago, on my 60th birthday, I was diagnosed with breast cancer, and I had a couple of surgeries and radiation, and now I have a mammogram every six months, and I have an MRI once a year just to make sure everything's good to go. So a reminder, ladies, be sure you get that annual mammogram scheduled, and please follow along. I'll keep you updated on how it goes during this audition process and also just on my college journey.

And good news on the mammogram. All clear!
